Ted Swenson is a writer-in-residence at a liberal arts college in New
England. It's a small town and everyone--not just the other faculty and
students, but a waitress at a restaurant and the owner of the
bookstore--know him and make assumptions about him, namely that he is
working on his third novel. However,
we, the readers of this
novel, know something different. What does it tell us about this
protagonist that he is teaching students how to write fiction and he no
longer writes it himself?
Other questions:
- What do you think of his relationship w/ Angela Argo so far? His
relationship w/ his wife? With his daughter? With his colleagues?
- What is the point-of-view of this novel and how does that affect the way you're reading it?
- Based on what you've read so far, what do you expect to happen?
- What questions do you have so far?
After reading, so far he loves his wife and his relationship seems fine with her. Its not going so well with his daughter, they don't have a strong bonded relationship. He seems fine with his colleagues. The point of view is in third person and it limits us to only what Swennson is thinking. We get to focus on one character and what his thoughts are. We see everything through his eyes. I expect the relationship between Swenson and Angela to head towards a risky and dangerous path. My question is did Angela have feelings for Swenson before are after their meetings on her novel?
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the first few chapters so far Swenson loves his wife a lot. As per his job he sometimes gets tired of repeating the same steps over and over again, like his life is not really interesting. The point of view is in the third person which focuses mainly on Swenson and the people he associates with. So far regarding his relationship with Angela, he is kind of overthinking his every move I believe since the college had that sexual harassment meeting. Also, he believes that Angela is writing about him which kind of gets him excited and scared at the same time. I am not sure if Angela had feelings for him before and just lied when he had asked when she started the Novel but so far from reading, I think they both are getting interested in each other and am excited to read more too see what happens next.
